The History of Cypress, TX
If you ask anyone from Houston, TX where is Cypress, someone might reluctantly say, “Right off the 290 West (Northwest Freeway)”. However, it is much more than an exit on the freeway. The history of this community dates back to the era of the Native Americans. The Atakapan and Akokisa Indian Tribes historically inhabited the land for centuries. On March 22, 1986, General Sam Houston camped in this area right before the battle of San Jacinto. A few years later, German immigrants began to settle near the Cypress Creek in the 1840s. In 1878, the community built a hall named Tin Hall. Even though it burnt down it was rebuilt. Today, it is still operating and is still a favorite hangout among the locals today after so many years have passed. Developers starting looking at the area for suburbanization in the 1950s.
Cypress – Fairbanks Independent School District
The first school was built and established in 1884 and was operating as a one-room school. Then, the community founded two primary schools: Big Cypress School and Fairbanks High School. In 1930, the two schools would combine and develop the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (also known as Cy-Fair ISD). This school district would go on and become the second largest school district in the state of Texas right below the Houston Independent School District.
